Fiji is a fabulous, safe, friendly, divine tropical holiday destination year-round depending on your budget and what you want to get out of your time there. Be it a flop and drop relaxing on the beach getaway or fun and active getting out amongst the locals or in the water you are guaranteed a good time as long as you have done your research so your expectations are met.
Once you are there, getting around is easy, fast and efficient with regular, daily domestic transfer flights. The domestic terminal for internal flights is a short 2-minute walk from international.
Fiji offers a warm tropical climate which makes it ideal for holidaymakers all year round, however, there is a reason that the busiest months for tourists are June to October as these are generally the driest with the most stable weather patterns. Average yearly temperatures range from 26 degrees Celsius to 30C with average sea temperatures ranging from 26C to 29C.
I have attended many trade and travel shows all over Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific and all around the world the first question most people ask when they realise I have intimate knowledge of Fiji is……” what is the best time of year to visit Fiji”?
Of course, the reason most people are asking this question is due to weather concerns as opposed to when the most cost-effective time is to travel to Fiji.
I have analysed both weather and cost-effectiveness in the hope of making the decision easier depending on your dreams and budget!
1. Cost-effectiveness
Australia and New Zealand are the two biggest source markets to Fiji and with Fiji being such a tremendous family destination, it makes sense that the busiest times or high-seasons are over the school holidays around April, July, end Sept/early October and from the 22nd of December to the end of January. These months being the most in-demand it goes without saying that they are also generally the most expensive months to travel to Fiji as space for a seat on the plane and a bure (bungalow) or hotel room becomes harder to find.
The shoulder seasons are a very good time to travel to Fiji if you want to avoid the crowds or for couples, honeymoons and groups. May and June are popular months to get married in Fiji as these months fall in the shoulder season, as well as August to early September and mid-October to mid-December.
The off-peak season therefore from February to March is generally the cheapest and most cost-effective time to visit Fiji with demand lower due to the unstable weather patterns and higher rainfall. As with all tropical climates, the mornings over these months start beautifully calm with winds picking up as the day progresses and the temperature climbs. The clouds build up and by mid to late afternoon the heavens will open with tropical rain and thunderstorms, but they generally don’t last that long and are over within a few hours, leaving you to enjoy a calm evening as the wind dies back down again once the sun disappears for the day.
